Crime prevention operations saw various suspects arrested

The City’s Traffic Officers arrested 126 suspects, impounded 107 vehicles, 94 cellphones and issued 43438 fines which included the impoundment of 23 taxis by the Taxi Enforcement Unit, as well as issuing 1 040 fines for various offences.
During a scheduled roadblock conducted in the Wynberg and Rondebosch areas officers arrested 21 suspects for driving while under the influence of alcohol. In the Green Point and airport areas officers impounded 31 vehicles and issued 119 fines for various other offences.
Illegal street racing remains a challenge – Traffic Officers arrested 15 suspects during a scheduled operation held in the Athlone and Mannenberg areas. These arrests included nine for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for reckless and negligent driving, one for escaping custody, and one for fleeing from the scene of an accident. Officers also issued 401 fines for other offences.
‘The City will ensure that the rules of the road are adhered to. We will continue to focus on any road traffic transgression and enforce by-laws equally. Law-abiding citizens have the right to be protected against criminals and we will continue to act quickly and arrest those who break the law. We remain committed to assisting the South African Police Service in their investigations so that arrests made by City’s Law Enforcement Officers are followed up by successful prosecutions,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Metro Police
Metro Police Officers arrested 14 suspects for driving while under the influence of alcohol with the highest reading recorded at 113 mg/L. A further 21 suspects were arrested on various charges which included illegal possession of drugs, assault, robbery, fraud, reckless and negligent driving, fleeing the accident scene, resisting arrest and intimidation. Officers also issued 1 501 fines for various by-law and traffic contraventions.
On Saturday, 18 January 2020, officers arrested a 32-year old suspect in Koeberg Road in Milnerton for assaulting an official, resisting arrest and intimidation. The officers stopped to assist the suspect after they noticed his vehicle was broken down. The suspect got aggressive when he was approached by the officers who then decided to check if the vehicle was stolen. The suspect drove off and nearly run over the officers. The suspect stopped and kept on insulting the officers. The officers sustained no injuries during the process. The suspect was arrested and detained at Milnerton SAPS.
Metro Police members attached to the K9 Unit followed up on information to search a house in Parow where they found 6 bankies of tik, 5 mandrax tablets, 3 half mandrax tablets, as well as four dagga stoppe. The owner was arrested for possession of drugs and detained at Parow SAPS.
During a crime prevention patrol in the Airport Industria area, officers were approached by a member of the public who informed them that eight men were robbing people. The officers gave chase and one of the robbers collided with the officers’ patrol vehicle. The suspect sustained minor injuries and after receiving medical treatment the 19-year old suspect was arrested for robbery and was detained at the Bishops Lavis SAPS.
Officers also supported 18 motorists with broken-down vehicles on the N2 and R300 freeways where they waited with the motorists until assistance arrived. Officers also conducted foot patrols on various beaches across the metropole as part of the crime prevention programmes.
'Motorists travelling on the R300 and N2 should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and don’t have any defects that could cause the vehicle to breakdown as criminals are still targeting motorists on these roads. Metro Police and Traffic Services will maintain high visibility on the roads, but motorists should also be vigilant when they travel on the N2 and R300,’ said Alderman Smith.
